Bulletproof Faith

Bulletproof Faith Cover

The first book from Whosoever founder and editor Candace Chellew-Hodge is now available for pre-order. Bulletproof Faith: A Spiritual Survival Guide for Gay and Lesbian Christians, published by Jossey-Bass, will be on the shelves in September 2008.

This book is a practical guide to defending your faith against even the most vicious attacks from those who say a person cannot be both gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and Christian.

Early praise for Bulletproof Faith:

"Gay and lesbian Christians are constantly demoralized and told they are not children of God. In Bulletproof Faith, Chellew-Hodge reassures gays and lesbians that God loves them just as they were created and teaches them how to stand strong, with compassion and gentleness, against those who condemn them." -Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu

The Paradox of Freedom
By: Candace Chellew-Hodge

It's a paradox - we think we want freedom so we can do anything we please - but when we put God first in our lives, those pleasing things of the world don't seem so attractive after all.

"Want Freedom Fries With That?"
By: Lori Heine

No one can place a price on what God has freely given. All we need to do to claim that freedom is to obey the primary order ever given us by the God Who Is – and that is, quite simply, to be.

Transgenderism and Religious Narratives
By: Melissa Conroy

As a scholar interested in religion and gender, I did not find the controversy at all surprising. The implicit dimorphism of the story of Adam and Eve deeply conditions our understanding of the possibilities of our species.

Stop Arguing About the Bible and Homosexuality
By: Candace Chellew-Hodge

We should not be spending our energy arguing the Bible or even worrying if the Bible condemns us as gay and lesbian people.

The Pastor Behind the Gay Marriage Ruling
By: John Dart

Little noted in the history behind the California Supreme Court decision that gives the "right to marry" to same-sex couples are the bold steps taken over four decades by onetime Pentecostal minister Troy Perry in trying to establish legal and religious rights for gays and lesbians.

"Anxiety"

He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing."
-Luke 12:22-23

Anxiety and worry play a big role in our lives. We worry about our jobs, our kids, our finances - especially with the price of gas going up. As GLBT people we worry about whether the Bible condemns us or if society will ever fully accept us as full, equal citizens. Worry and anxiety seem to be our constant companions in this world.

However, Jesus tells us not to worry about things in this world - not to worry about what we'll eat or what we'll wear. Jesus promises us that God provides for all of our needs - that there is no need for worry or anxiety. This is good news, but it's so difficult for us to hear it and even more difficult to live into this promise. How can we let go of our worries and anxieties? How can we fully give our lives to God, trusting God to take care of all of our needs?

We'll explore these questions and more in the September/October 2008 issue of Whosoever. If you would like to write on this topic, or any other topic, please send an email to the editor.

Deadline: August 28, 2008

Presbyterian minister Rev. Dr. Janie Spahr has been acquitted by the church's highest court of charges over her performance of same-gender weddings. Find out why the ruling is a mix of good news and bad news. "Would Jesus Discriminate?" This is the question Rev. Dr. Cindi Love is asking in her new book - and it's spurring a worldwide movement. Anthony Venn Brown had a great career in the Assemblies of God church - but there was only one problem - he's gay. The second edition of his autobiography A Life of Unlearning has been published and details his 22 year journey to self-acceptance. We hear from them all in Whosoever's 23rd Godcast.

How Can You Defend Your Spirit?

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Christians are the target of hateful words that hurt our souls and often lead us to commit spiritual suicide. How can you defend yourself? Whosoever recently hosted a teleseminar on Spiritual Self-Defense for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Christians.

Hosted by Whosoever founder and editor Candace Chellew-Hodge, the TeleSeminar gives you the tools you need to defend yourself whenever you are attacked because of your faith and sexual orientation or gender identity.
